How do I do tapping?

How do I do tapping?

The basic recipe

It is very important to rate our issue on a scale of 0 – 10, this is known as a SUD, (subjective unit of distress), this gives us the ability to tell that the EFT is working. 0 is no intensity at all and 10 is the highest intensity we could possibly imagine. Test and rate before and after each round of tapping.

If we concentrate hard, we know that every feeling we have in our mind can normally be felt somewhere in the body. Hence the phrases, stomach is in knots, he’s a pain in the neck/bum etc.

So next we try to state where the feeling is. If possible giving that feeling a shape and colour would be useful to describe it to ourselves. Also si there  a ‘movement’? is it stabbing, turning, cramping etc. The idea is to describe to ourselves as specifically as possible what we are trying to work on.

So to recap, using an example of anxiety

  • SUD – 6/10
  • In the stomach
  • Ball shaped
  • Orange in colour
  • Churning feeling

So, you tap on the side of your hand – where a karate chop would hit the wood – (creatively referred to as the karate chop point)

Whilst tapping this point we state the problem

“Even though I feel this anxiety”

And then we (and this could be uncomfortable and strange) let ourselves know that we are OK people even with this problem

“I deeply love and accept myself”            WHY DO I HAVE TO SAY THIS? Link……

Some people are not happy about this so, if this is truly uncomfortable then we can say – I accept that this is just the way I feel at the moment.

Or

I am still an OK person,

I’m OK, one day soon I will love and accept myself

For kids – I’m still a great kid…

Just something as positive as possible about yourself.

This is known as the set up phrase.

We then tap on the other points, starting at the top of the head (TH), down through eyebrows (EB) , side of the eye (SE), under the eye (UE), under the nose (UN), chin (CH), collar bone (CB), under the arm (UA).

We tap reasonably hard, not so that it hurts! But so we can feel it, it is not vital to tap an exact spot, tapping anywhere around the point will do the job, although I find it more effective if you do hit the exact spot.

As we tap on each point we state an element of the set up phrase and the level we felt it at.

(TH)This anxiety

(EB)This anxiety

(SE)At a level of 6

(UE)This anxiety

(UN)In my stomach

(CH) Churning orange ball

(CB)This anxiety

(UA)At a level of 6

(TH)This anxiety

(EB) Churning orange ball

(SE)At a level of 6

(UE)This anxiety

(UN)In my stomach

(CH)Churning orange ball

(CB)This anxiety

(UA)At a level of 6

Now we can stop, take a deep breath and feel what has happened. The likelihood is that the level has dropped and a strong possibility is that the shape or colour might well have changed.

Now we can repeat the process until the feeling has disappeared or is at a level we are content with.

That is the EFT basic recipe and can be used by anyone to reduce the intensity of any feeling they choose to.

For more in depth healing we need some more advanced techniques.

The real skill with EFT is to discover what is causing the negative emotion in the first place, whether it be a traumatic event (from childhood), an irrational fear or whatever.

Many, many negative issues will stem from childhood and if we can discover the cause and investigate the reasons we can change the feeling connected to them.

There are several techniques available to do this with.

If we imagine a table (with as many legs as necessary), the table top is the issue we have, for instance anxiety, and the legs are different aspects which affect the issue.

For instance, we might have not enjoyed spelling tests when we were at school, they might have made us anxious, then as we went to college/university there could have been times when we were on our own, which made us anxious, then going for a job interview, first day at work, breaking from a first love, having a car accident and then subsequent anxiety at getting back behind the wheel, then the bills stacking up and money worries as we get older and before we know it we are suffering from constant anxiety attacks, our body had learned to do anxiety very well and is able to switch it on many times a day at times making us feel sick, stressed depressed, panicky, all manner of things.

Each one of the above events is one of the legs that hold up the table top called anxiety, they are referred to in EFT as aspects. Each aspect can be worked on individually, we wouldn’t necessarily need to work on every one as more often than not working on a few will lead to the eventual collapse of all of them and the disappearance of the table top we call anxiety.

We will then walk away trying to remember how we felt before and why we felt it and be thoroughly confused as to how we managed to suffer for so long and be so debilitated by something that we can’t even remember now!!!

This is the miracle of EFT and the amount of times it happens is phenomenal!!
